                 Finding Freedom Summary

Finding Freedom: A Cook's Story; Remaking a Life from Scratch book summary: "It is only a matter of time before Americans start talking back.
Why not start now?
That's the message that food writer Erin French has for us in her new book, Finding Freedom: A Cook's Story.
Erin is a California girl who grew up in conservative small - town Texas. Her mother, like many at the time, thought cooking a woman's domain.
But Erin's talent for cooking was recognized early and helped her earn a degree in journalism.
She continued cooking as she traveled around the country to pursue her career in food writing, even after her parents divorced and she no longer lived with her mother.
Her first food column appeared in the San Francisco Chronicle, a taste of what would be to come.
When the article "Dining Out," about the devastating effects of a contaminated Italian tomato product on consumers, ran in the Washington Post, she was offered a book contract.
That book would become The Joy of Cooking.
She went on to create thousands of recipes for the major home cooking magazines and writes for many magazines, including the New York Times.
Her life was turned upside down when she was diagnosed with breast cancer and she had to start from scratch.
